13 Numbers in Australia

13 numbers work in the same way as 1300 numbers, allowing customers from all over the country to call your business for the cost of a local call.

The number format for 13 numbers is 13 XXXX (6 characters) compared to a 1300 number which is 1300 XXXXXX (10 characters).

Because there are less characters (6) in the number compared to 1300 or 1800 numbers (10) there are less 13 number combinations possible. Consequently there are less available 13 numbers available for distribution.

13 number costs

The main differences with a 13 number are:

  • the obviously shorter (and easier to remember) number
  • an additional government surcharge of $8110 per annum (if paid in advance) or $850 per month (includes administration fee when paid in monthly installments - minimum 12 months contract).
NOTE: This surcharge does NOT apply to 1300 numbers.

The government surcharge is in addition to the normal carrier charges (e.g. monthly plan fee and call charges).

Many small to medium businesses cannot justify this additional cost.

Apart from the number format, the functions of a 13 number are the same as a 1300 number

As with a 1300 number, calls to a 13 number from a local landline caller that are answered on a landline include FREE talk time. Free minutes vary depending on plans, with our most popular 13 number plan providing 30 free minutes.

Account Holder: the first minutes are FREE for calls originating from a local fixed line phone and terminating on your fixed landline. After the FREE talk time minutes, our low call rates apply.

The caller: pays a normal local call fee from any fixed line phone anywhere in Australia. If the caller is using a mobile phone, they will pay a rate that is determined by their mobile service provider.

Things you should know (13 number terms and conditions). 13 number Calls are billed pro-rata in 1 second increments. Rates are quoted per minute and exclude GST. There is NO flagfall or call connection Fee. Inbound call rates vary based on caller location and answering point. Notes on FREE Minutes: Applies only to the Alltel Saver and Super Saver 13 number plans and applies to calls originating from a local fixed landline and terminating at a local fixed landline. Normal plan rates apply after first FREE 30 minutes on the Alltel Saver plan. Advertised rates may change without notice and are for new On-Net customers. Off-Net rates may be slightly higher. A minimum charge of 15c applies on 13 inbound calls from national, international or mobile origin (does NOT apply to free talk time on 13 numbers and calls to 13 numbers originating from a local landline). A $19 setup fee applies to each new inbound number. If customer pays 13 number government surcharge ($8110 per annum) in advance, there is NO term contract. However, we require 1 calendar months notice if you are changing carriers or closing your account. If customer pays the 13 number government surcharge monthly ($675.83), the number must be connected/carried by Alltel for a minimum term of 12 months (12 month contract) and we charge a monthly administration fee of $175 per month. Minimum total cost over 12 months is $10,209.96 plus normal monthly plan fee and call charges. Cancellation and or port-away fees apply. Current rates are only for new customers applying via this website. Services are only available to credit approved customers who pay by Direct Debit. Not applicable for existing customers or competitors. Includes standard level of routing/barring. All pricing is ex GST.
Fees apply for initial set up of services and for making changes to services. Additional setup fee may apply to complex routing/barring configurations.
